Nintendo Indie Titles

Nintendo Wants to Have 20 to 30 Indie Titles per Week on the Switch Store

If there’s one thing that can be said about the Nintendo Switch, it’s that it does value the indie market in ways that other platforms simply are unable to do. Nintendo indie titles have been allowed to shine, allowing games such as Hollow Knight and Battle Chef Brigade, that may have gotten lost behind huge AAA games on the PS4 and XB1, to finally get their chance to be played by the audience they deserve.

However, Nintendo has now said that they are aiming to include around 20 to 30 indie titles to release on the Nintendo Switch per week. This means that you’ll never be running out of trying the latest indie games, which isn’t just a good thing for you, but the developers as well. Of course, this may just mean that the store will overflow with so many indie titles that even the best may get lost under the tide, but only the future will tell us more.

This news comes from the 78th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders at Nintendo, where various executives answered questions about the past, present, and future of Nintendo. One question asked Nintendo how they plan to integrate indie games into its future business strategy.

Senior Executive Officer, Susumu Tanaka, had this to say: “We started working with indie developers during the Wii U generation. For Nintendo Switch, we set up a development environment that supports Unity middleware, which is used on smartphones and other platforms. We are also actively engaging with indie developers at video game-focused shows and other events in different regions.”

“We also had a Nintendo booth at the BitSummit indie game event held in Kyoto, where we showcased some games. Some of the indie games already released have gone on to become a million sellers worldwide. In the future, we are looking to release around 20 to 30 indie games on Nintendo Switch per week, and we definitely expect to see some great games among them.”

So we’ll have more Nintendo indie titles coming in the future. But, as mentioned above, whether they’ll do the Nintendo Switch any favors remains to be seen.
