DC and James Gunn Face Backlash as Ezra Miller is Still in Flash Movie

The big James Gunn DC announcement had everybody talking, as the first part of the DC Universe slate, under both Gunn and Peter Safran’s control, was unveiled. Not everybody was excited about what was coming up, however. One of the biggest controversies surrounding the co-chairpersons and co-CEOs vision, was that they seemed happy to push ahead with the release of the Ezra Miller-led movie, The Flash. It also appeared that the door was remaining open for Miller to keep the role in the distant future, dependant on how their recovery journey pans out.

Miller has been accused of some serious crimes (broken down by The Cut) in the past few months, including allegations of felony burglary, physical assault, disorderly conduct, and even brainwashing a young activist to keep them away from their parents. A temporary harassment prevention order was also granted against Miller in 2022, to protect an unnamed mother and her 12-year-old child. The accusations of violence weren’t the first, as Miller was alleged to have choked a woman in 2020, and a video of the incident going viral.

DC fans slam James Gunn and Peter Safran for keeping Ezra Miller in The Flash movie

One of the biggest criticisms of keeping Ezra Miller as The Flash, was that it was a devaluing of women who may have been affected by the actor. Another fan pointed to Peter Safran’s comments about how releasing the movie Batgirl “would have hurt DC,” before he said of Miller that “when the time is right, when they feel they are ready to have the discussion, we’ll all figure out what the best way forward is.” James Gunn added, when pressed about Miller’s future as The Flash, that we will “see what happens.”

The Flash is “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” said Gunn. He went on to explain how the narrative is important for the shift of the DCU, as it “resets the entire DC Universe.” While this may be necessary for Gunn and Safran’s “unified” approach to DC storytelling, that isn’t enough for the fans who think Miller shouldn’t be involved in any capacity.

Barring any changes, The Flash will hit movie theaters on June 16, 2023.
